Abstract

Having millions of fans worldwide, K-pop plays a significant role in global popular culture and fashion trends. The K-pop industry is renowned for its daring and innovative fashion experiments. K-pop artists, like Amber Liu, often showcase styles that challenge traditional gender stereotypes, including androgynous fashion, which is the focal point of this study. The research aims to uncover how Amber Liu, a K�pop artist, uses fashion to express androgynous identity within the context of the South Korean entertainment industry. This qualitative study employs Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method on three music videos of Amber Liu to examine signs that deepen gender stereotypes. The selected music videos highlight Amber Liu's androgynous style in clothing and appearance. Data is analyzed to identify signs used to create an androgynous image, such as short haircuts, masculine clothing, body gestures, and facial expressions. The results of the analysis indicate that Amber Liu actively uses these elements to express herself in the K-pop music industry. This research also examines how social media, such as music videos on YouTube, serves as a platform to respond to and shape public views on gender and identity. The findings of this study contribute to expanding understanding of gender representation in global popular culture, particularly within the increasingly influential context of the South Korean entertainment industry.
