Abstract
Succession planning is crucial for organizational growth and business longevity in family businesses. Ensuring continuity through inheritance, rule management, and contingency planning for sudden leadership changes, such as the demise of the founder, is vital. Without succession planning, family businesses are prone to failure during leadership crises. Successor preparation and family commitment play pivotal roles in successful succession planning. The research aims to investigate that sustained business success across generations depends on effective succession planning, successor’s preparation, family commitment, and the involvement of the controlling generation. This research employs a quantitative approach, using data collected from online questionnaires distributed to 86 licensed BB KUPVA (Foreign Exchange Business Activities Non-Bank) owners in East Java. Reliability and validity tests, descriptive analysis, and hypothesis testing were conducted to assess model fit and variable relationships. Results indicate that all indicators meet convergent and discriminant validity and reliability, supporting the acceptance of the measurement model for further analysis. The PLS-SEM model demonstrates excellent predictive capability, with a good fit (SRMR = 0.070). Hypothesis testing reveals that succession planning significantly impacts generation in control and family business longevity. However, successor preparation does not directly affect previous generation involvement or control. Family commitment strongly correlates with family business longevity and generation in control. A balanced approach to strengthen succession planning and generation in control is crucial for significant improvements in family business longevity.
