Abstract
This study aims to analyze the characteristics of porous Asphalt mixtures using PET plastic waste as a substitute for PG 70 modified asphalt with OGA 14 gradation based on AAPA (2004). The Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) was determined by evaluating Marshall Stability, Flow, Marshall Quotient (MQ), Cantabro Loss (CL), and Asphalt Flow Down (AFD) at asphalt contents of 4%, 4.5%, 5%, 5.5%, and 6%. The results showed that the 6% asphalt content provided the optimal performance, with a stability value of 964.50 kg (≥500 kg), Flow of 1.75 mm, MQ of 556.02 kg/mm, CL of 12.42% (≤35%), and AFD of 0.26% (≤0.3%). Therefore, the 6% asphalt content was selected as the OAC due to its highest stability and lowest CL value. At the OAC condition, PET substitution levels of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% were applied, with 0% PET used as the control mixture. Increasing the PET content within the range of 2.5%–7.5% tended to improve the stability and stiffness of the mixture, as indicated by the increase in stability from 864.03 kg to 1245.81 kg and MQ from 444.82 kg/mm to 1008.97 kg/mm. Conversely, the Flow value decreased from 2.00 mm to 1.25 mm with increasing PET content, resulting in only the 2.5% PET variation meeting the specification requirements. Cantabro Loss increased from 7.32% to 29.95%, while Asphalt Flow Down decreased from 0.26% to 0.17%; however, all variations satisfied the AAPA (2004) specifications. Permeability decreased from 0.15 cm/s to 0.14 cm/s for PET contents ranging from 2.5% to 7.5%, while the drainage capability of the mixture was maintained. Based on the research results, the 2.5% PET variation provided optimal performance because it was the only variation that met the Flow specification while maintaining good durability and permeability. These results indicate that PET plastic waste can be used as a substitute for modified asphalt in porous asphalt mixtures without reducing the drainage characteristics and durability of the mixture.
