Abstract
AA 6061 aluminum alloy is widely used in industry due to its excellent combination of mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance, and good manufacturability. However, the remelting process may cause changes in the microstructure and reduce the mechanical properties of the material. This study aims to analyze the effect of artificial aging temperature and holding time variations during the T6 heat treatment process on the hardness and microstructure of remelted AA 6061 aluminum alloy. The research began with the remelting process of AA 6061 aluminum alloy, followed by T6 heat treatment consisting of solution treatment at 540°C for 1 hour, water quenching, and artificial aging at temperatures of 165°C, 185°C, and 205°C with holding times of 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 hours. The material was characterized using the Brinell hardness test, microstructural observation with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and elemental composition analysis using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). The results showed that variations in artificial aging temperature and holding time significantly affected the hardness and particle distribution within the aluminum matrix. The highest hardness value of 68.15 BHN was obtained at an aging temperature of 185°C with a holding time of 2.5 hours, while the lowest hardness value of 45.25 BHN was obtained at an aging temperature of 165°C with a holding time of 1.5 hours. SEM observations indicated that a more homogeneous particle distribution tended to produce higher hardness values. Furthermore, EDX analysis revealed the presence of Mg and Si elements in the observed areas, indicating the potential formation of Mg₂Si-based precipitates. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that variations in artificial aging temperature and holding time during the T6 heat treatment process influence the particle distribution and hardness of remelted AA 6061 aluminum alloy. The optimum aging condition in this study was achieved at an aging temperature of 185°C with a holding time of 2.5 hours.
