Abstract
Emerging adulthood is a crucial developmental period in which individuals are expected to build intimacy, making romantic partnerships relevant to psychological well-being. Self-esteem is considered a personal factor that may be associated with psychological well-being because it relates to how individuals evaluate themselves and maintain healthy boundaries in relationships. This study examined the association between self-esteem and psychological well-being among emerging adult women (aged 18–25) who are dating. A quantitative correlational design was employed. Participants were 96 women living in Surabaya who had been dating for at least three months, recruited through purposive sampling. Psychological well-being was measured using a 42-item scale based on Ryff’s (1989) model (α = 0.979), and self-esteem was measured using a 27-item scale based on Tafarodi and Swann’s (1995) self-liking and self-competence framework (α = 0.970). Because the data were not normally distributed, Spearman’s rho correlation was used. The results indicated a statistically significant positive association between self esteem and psychological well-being (rₛ = 0.850, p < 0.01), suggesting a very strong relationship. In other words, higher self-esteem was associated with higher psychological well-being among emerging adult women who are dating.
