Abstract

Academic stress is a condition of psychological distress often experienced by students due to high academic demands, particularly among young adult students in romantic relationships. This situation requires students to employ adaptive coping strategies to effectively manage academic demands. In addition to coping strategies, social support is also considered to play a crucial role in helping students cope with academic stress, both as a source of emotional and instrumental support. This study aims to determine the relationship between coping strategies and academic stress among students in romantic relationships in Surabaya and to examine the role of social support as a moderating variable in this relationship. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The subjects were 167 students in romantic relationships and pursuing higher education in Surabaya. Data were collected using a coping strategy scale based on the theory of Lazarus and Folkman, an academic stress scale based on aspects of Bedewy and Gabriel, and a social support scale based on aspects of Sarafino and Smith. Data were analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results showed a significant relationship between coping strategies and academic stress. Furthermore, social support has been shown to play a significant role as a moderating variable in the relationship between coping strategies and academic stress, where the presence of social support helps students optimize the use of coping strategies when facing academic demands.
