Abstract

Jobs in the public service sector require employees to deal with high emotional pressure, creating the ability to find meaning in work an important psychological aspect. Differences in the meaning of work show that internal factors, particularly emotional regulation, play a role in shaping a meaningful work experience. This study aims to determine the relationship between the cognitive reappraisal emotion regulation strategy and meaningful work among employees of the Surabaya City Transportation Agency, as well as to answer the question of whether the use of cognitive reappraisal is related to the level of perceived meaningfulness of work. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the Work and Meaning Inventory (WAMI) and the cognitive reappraisal dimension of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) on 123 employees. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rho correlation test. The results of the hypothesis test showed a positive and significant relationship between cognitive reappraisal and meaningful work (r = 0.410; p < 0.01), indicating that the higher the employees' ability to cognitively reappraise work situations, the higher the level of perceived meaningfulness of work. These findings contribute to understanding the role of cognitive emotion regulation as a psychological mechanism that supports the formation of meaningful work experiences among public service employees, and provides a basis for the development of psychological interventions in the workplace.
