Abstract

Academic stress is one of the psychological problems commonly experienced by senior high school students due to high academic demands, such as academic workload, evaluation pressure, and expectations from the school and family environment. This condition may lead to a decline in students’ psychological well being and academic performance. One internal factor that plays a role in influencing the level of academic stress is academic self-concept, which refers to an individual’s perception of their abilities and competencies in the academic domain. This study aims to examine the relationship between academic self-concept and academic stress among senior high school students. This study employed a quantitative approach using a correlational method. The participants were senior high school students selected using an incidental sampling technique based on predetermined criteria. Data were collected using an academic self-concept scale and an academic stress scale with a Likert model that had met validity and reliability requirements. Data analysis was conducted using statistical correlation techniques. The results indicate a significant relationship between academic self-concept and academic stress among senior high school students with a negative direction. This means that the more positive the students’ academic self-concept, the lower the level of academic stress they experience, and vice versa. These findings suggest that academic self-concept plays an important role in helping students cope with academic demands more adaptively. Therefore, strengthening academic self-concept should be considered an important focus in educational settings as an effort to reduce academic stress among senior high school students.
