Abstract

This research discusses the design modification of coal burner nozzles in coal-fired power plants to reduce erosion caused by abrasive particle flow and high temperatures. Erosion on nozzle components leads to reduced combustion efficiency and short service life. Three nozzle variations were analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation in ANSYS Fluent: the existing design, a modified design without coating, and a modified design with Zirconia (ZrO₂) ceramic coating. Simulation results showed that the coated design had significantly lower erosion rates compared to the other two and demonstrated more stable pressure and velocity distributions. The use of ceramic coatings proved to enhance abrasion resistance and extended the component's lifespan to over 15 months. This study recommends the combined use of optimized geometry and ceramic coatings as an effective technical solution to reduce erosion and improve the reliability of coal combustion systems in power plants.
