Abstract
Low academic engagement can lead to various emerging problems related to students' academic achievement, mental health, and other academic issues. A study by Truta et al. (2018) revealed that academic engagement has a significant negative relationship with the tendency to drop out. According to data released by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology (Ditjen Diktiristek), Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) in 2022, 4% or 375,134 university students in Indonesia discontinued their studies. Among them, undergraduate students dominated with 308,495 cases, accounting for 82.24% of the total dropouts. This study aims to examine the role of psychological well-being as a mediator in the relationship between sense of belongingness and academic engagement among students in Surabaya. This research employed a quantitative correlational approach with a mediating variable. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling, involving 384 student respondents.Mediation analysis using the statistical software Jamovi version 2.6.17 revealed that sense ofbelongingness had a significant direct effect on academic engagement (estimates = 0.9403; p = 0.000 < 0.05). However, the indirect effect analysis showed that psychological well-being did not act as a mediator in the relationship (estimates = -0.006; p = 0.190 > 0.05). Therefore, the first hypothesis (H1) was accepted, while the second hypothesis (H2) was rejected.
