Abstract

Social media is changing the way individuals interact and make decisions. Social media influences individuals by encouraging copycat behaviour and triggering Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) is influenced by a person's self control. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-control and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in students who use e-cigarettes in Surabaya city. This study uses a correlational type quantitative approach. The subjects used in this study were students who used e-cigarettes in the city of Surabaya. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling method with a sample of 138 students. The analysis technique used Pearson product moment with the IBM SPSS 25.0 for Windows programme which obtained a correlation of -0,560 with a significant 0.000 <0,01. This means that the correlation is very significant between the two variables of self-control and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). The results obtained show that there is a negative relationship between self-control and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in students who use e-cigarettes in Surabaya city. So, the hypothesis in this study can be accepted. That is, the higher the self-control of students who use e-cigarettes in the city of Surabaya, the lower the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in students who use e-cigarettes in the city of Surabaya.
