Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-control and narcissistic tendencies in Instagram social media users. The problem in this study is how self-control affects narcissistic tendencies, especially in late adolescents who are active Instagram users. The research method used is a quantitative correlational approach, with the initial sampling technique being purposive sampling based on the criteria of Instagram users aged 18-24 years, using Instagram for more than 6 hours per day and having an upload intensity of 5-10 times per day. However, due to time constraints and insufficient data, this study used an accidental sampling approach to meet the sample requirement of 134 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Spearman Rho. The results showed a significant negative relationship between self-control and narcissistic tendencies, with a correlation value of rxy = -0.358 and p = 0.000 (p <0.01). This finding indicates that the higher an individual's self-control, the lower their narcissistic tendencies. Conversely, low self-control correlates with increased narcissistic behavior. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of developing self-control skills to reduce the negative impact of social media use on narcissistic tendencies.
