Abstract

Casual fashion trends are characterized by simple, flexible, and comfortable clothing, in accordance with the lifeStyle of its users. This trend is influenced by external factors such as social media and European and Asian cultures, which have an impact on social and cultural change. Teenagers and students are the main consumers in the fashion world, which functions as a means of self-expression and identity. Fashion is also related to self-image, social status, and gender, reflecting individual and group affiliations. The study aims to determine the perception of Untag Surabaya students about casual fashion trends on the Instagram account @rucas.co. This study uses the selective process theory, which is a psychological process that includes selective exposure, selective recall, and selective perception designed to reduce dissonance. This study adopts a qualitative research method, combining primary and secondary data sources. Data were obtained through collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data will be analyzed through the stages of data collection, data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. This study found that Untag Surabaya students' perceptions of casual fashion trends are influenced by lifeStyle, culture, and social class. Individuals with casual and modern lifeStyles are more open to new trends, while those who are more specific tend to be critical. Social class also plays an important role, where price and brand exclusivity are key considerations, linking fashion trends to social status. Casual fashion from the Rucas brand, for example, is associated with the upper class, creating a social stigma. Overall, this study emphasizes that consumer perceptions of fashion trends are complex social constructs, influenced by the interaction of personal, social, and cultural factors.
