Abstract
This study analyzes the reception of Communication Science students at the University of 17 August 1945 Surabaya towards the controversy of Kiky Saputri's roasting of Ganjar Pranowo. The approach of this study is qualitative with a case study method. Data were collected through interviews with four informants. This study uses Stuart Hall's reception theory, which examines how audiences interpret media messages. According to this theory, media messages are interpreted according to the context and culture of the message recipient, with three main positions, namely dominant, negotiating, and oppositional positions. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to understand how students interpret the controversy of Kiky Saputri's roasting of Ganjar Pranowo. Interviews were conducted to collect data from informants regarding their views on the roasting. The results showed that three informants were in the dominant position, considering that Kiky Saputri was brave and interesting in conveying criticism. One informant was in the opposition position because he believed in his own views and was not influenced by the responses of others. Regarding the request of Ganjar's team to cut the roasting sentence, all informants rejected the action and were in the opposition position. This study shows that the way messages are packaged with humor can affect the acceptance of the media by the audience. The use of roasting by Kiky Saputri was well received by the majority of informants who appreciated her courage in criticizing humorously. However, Ganjar's team's request to cut the roasting sentence was rejected by all informants, who considered the action detrimental to Ganjar's reputation in the eyes of the public. This study groups the informant's reception into three main positions: dominant, negotiation, and opposition, with the result of dominance in opposition to the action of cutting the roasting sentence.
