Abstract

This study discusses how the boy group ENHYPEN, consisting of seven male members, illustrates the type of mugukjeok masculinity, which is a form of hybrid masculinity combining elements from four different cultures: Confucian teachings (China), Seonbi (South Korea), Bishonen (Japan), and metrosexual men (America). By analyzing 10 scenes from the music video "Drunk-Dazed," this study also employs the semiotics model of Charles Sanders Peirce and Stuart Hall's theory of representation. The results show that the Korean wave has introduced many South Korean boy groups designed to dominate the pop music market, bringing diverse and non-normative forms of masculinity. ENHYPEN members predominantly represent metrosexual men and Japanese bishonen. Examples include BYJ from the Korean drama "Winter Sonata," Rain, a very famous South Korean singer starring in the Korean drama "Full House," and Dae-Soo from the Korean drama "Oldboy." This demonstrates the characteristics of mugukjeok in the form of soft masculinity.
