Abstract
SMAW welding is manual are welding where welding heat is generated by an electric arc between a flux-shielded electrode and the workpiece. The welding process can affect the physical and mechanical properties of carbon steel, so it is necessary to carry out a heat treatment process to reduce residual stress in the steel being welded. This research aims to determine the effect of PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment) on SMAW welding of S45C steel plates with variations in electrode diameter and welding current on hardness and impact strength In this research, S45C steel plate was used as the material to be tested. The welding process uses SMAW welding (Shield Metal Arc Welding). The variations used are electrode diameters with a diameter of (2.6 mm), (3.2 mm), (4.0 mm) and welding currents of 80 A, 100 A and 120 A. PWHT heat treatment uses the Normalizing method with a temperature of 900°C for increasing the hardness of S45C steel plate specimens. Next is the C scale Rockwell hardness test with a diamond cone indenter and a total load of 150 kg. Next is the Charpy impact testing stage, the Charpy impact test loading process uses an angle of 45°, a notch depth of 2 mm with a center radius of 0.25 mm. Rockwell and Impact Charpy hardness test data show inversely proportional results. It can be concluded that the highest value of the Rockwell hardness value for the Weld Metal part was obtained by a specimen with an electrode diameter of 4.0mm (120A) with a value of 55.9 HRC, and the lowest value was obtained by a specimen with an electrode diameter of 4.0mm (80A) with a value of 47.2 HRC. The highest impact value was obtained by welding specimens with an electrode diameter of 4.0mm (80) with a value of 0.072 J/mm2, while the lowest value was obtained by a specimen with an electrode diameter of 4.0 (120A) of 0.012 J/mm2
