Abstract

Hardness testing is a method for determining the effect of hot or cold treatment on materials that have undergone heat treatment and cold treatment can show the change in material strength by measuring the surface hardness of the material. In this test using ST 42 and ST 60 materials where these materials are commonly used in the construction of heavy equipment and shafts. The formulation of the problem in this study is to find out how much influence the hardening process has on each specimen. This test was carried out with each material with a total of 9 specimens, size Ø 30 mm and length 20 mm on each object to be tested heat at different temperatures, namely 850 ℃ using water cooling, 950 ℃ using oil cooling SAE 10, and 1050℃ using air cooling. Furthermore, the object will be tested for hardness by testbrinell using a spherical indenter with a diameter of 2,5 mm so that you can find out the right treatment to get material properties that suit your needs, especially in heavy equipment construction. This hard test is followed by a microstructure test. Thus the study obtained that the cooling media that produces the highest hardness value from the heat treatment process is ST 42 water mixture cooling media of 585.8 kg / mm2.
