Abstract
JIS SUP 9 steel is medium carbon steel which we usually encounter as leaf springs on loaded cars/trucks in its application used to support the load on the rear. Leaf springs are the main component used to dampen vibrations or shocks. Therefore, given the conditions received, the leaf spring material must have elasticity and be balanced with high toughness. The research aims to determine the effect of variations in holding time and cooling media on the hardening quenching treatment of JIS SUP 9 steel on hardness and microstructure. Hardening treatment at a temperature of 800°C with varying holding times of 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes. Then given a quenching treatment with a variety of cooling media oil, diesel, water. After that, a hardness test was carried out on the material surface using the C scale Rockwell method with a test load of 150kg with a 120° diamond cone indenter, then a microstructure test was carried out on the material surface using a 1500x magnification microscope. From the results of research on Rockwell hardness testing, the highest haraness value was obtained, namely in the condition after hardening quenching with a 25 minute holding time variation for water cooling media of 56,8 HRC. And the results of the microstructure testing research obtained the highest value of the pearlite phase percentage of 70% from the 25 minute holding time variation in the water cooling medium, so it can be concluded that the variation in holding time is longer and the water cooling media has an effect on increasing the hardness and increasing the growth of the pearlite phase. makes JIS SUP 9 steel harder
