Abstract

Tight competition in the world of work, especially modeling, is often heard. Models compete with each other to find bodies that match the qualifications of the agency they are sheltering in or for the sake of their work so that they can unconsciously experience body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is the fixation of negative feelings, judgments and thoughts on their overall physical appearance. The cause of the model experiencing body dissatisfaction is the internalization of ideal appearance and appearance-based social comparison. The purpose of this research is to see the relationship between social comparison and body dissatisfaction in the model. Respondents in this study are female models who are actively working in the modeling world, age range 12 – 30 years using purposive sampling technique, obtained a total sample of 105 models. Development of body dissatisfaction measurement tool using Rosen, Reiter & Orosan theory as reference and modification of PACS-R measuring instrument by Schaefer & Thompson for social comparison. In data analysis using spearman's rho, p = 0.000 (p < 0.01) with a coefficient value of 0.660. This means that there is a significant positive relationship between social comparison and body dissatisfaction in the model.
