Abstract
Firm performance is widely associated with the existence of strategic orientation, innovation capability, and competitive advantage. However, only a few studies have investigated the relationship between microenterprises performance and innovation capability, competitive advantage, and the dimensions of strategic orientation, namely market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, learning orientation, technology orientation, and network orientation. Fulfilling this call, this research aims to analyze the direct relation of the strategic orientation dimensions to the performance of microenterprises in the city of Surabaya and develop a model to explain the role of innovation capability as a mediator variable and the role of competitive advantage as a moderator variable. Based on a positivist paradigm and quantitative approach, cross-sectional survey data were obtained through a survey of 169 formal microenterprises that were under the supervision of the Surabaya City Cooperatives and Micro Enterprises Service. The analysis was carried out using SEM-PLS 2024. The results showed that of the five dimensions of strategic orientation, there is one, namely technology orientation, which is proven to have no direct effect on microenterprises performance. The other four dimensions of strategic orientation have been proven to have a significant direct positive influence on microenterprises performance. Innovation capability was proven to partially mediate the influence of market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, and learning orientation but did not mediate the influence of technology orientation and network orientation. Competitive advantage was proven to significantly moderate the influence of learning orientation on microenterprises performance but was not proven to act as a moderator for the influence of market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, technology orientation, and network orientation.
