Abstract
In the manufacturing industry, the use of aluminum is currently increasing. Aluminum is a lightweight and very durable non-ferrous metal element with good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. Aluminum is lighter than steel so it is widely used, including in shipbuilding, airplane components and car bodies. Aluminum is also used very effectively to make train parts. This research was carried out with the aim of determining the presence of defects on the weld surface and determining the tensile strength value of MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding results with 6061 aluminum material. This research used variations in electrode diameter with sizes of 0.8mm, 1mm and 1.2mm and a current of 100A , 110A, and 120A. The tests carried out in this research were penetrant tests with reference to the ASME Section V standard and tensile tests with reference to the ASTM E8 standard. The results obtained were that the results of the penetrant test on specimens resulting from welding with an electrode diameter of 0.8mm with a current of 100A had the highest number of defects with 11 points with indications of overlab and undercut, while the lowest number of defects were found with specimens resulting with welding with an electrode diameter with a current of 1.2mm. 120A with 2 point defects, namely porosity and undercut. From the tensile test results, the specimen resulting from welding with an electrode diameter of 1.2mm with a current of 100A has the highest voltage value with an average maximum stress value of 17.66kg/mm2, while the lowest tensile value is found in the specimen resulting with welding with an electrode diameter of 0.8mm with a current of 100A. the average value of maximum stress is 2.66kg/mm2. Therefore, it can be concluded that electrode diameter and current variations can affect the welding results. The use of electrode diameter and current must comply with welding standards, if it is not appropriate then the results will not be optimal.
