Abstract

Currently, aluminum is used as an alternative material to replace wood for fishing boats and steel for patrol boats because aluminum is malleable, flexible and corrosion resistant. Wood and steel materials are starting to be abandoned because of difficult maintenance, high prices, and heavy construction. This study aims to determine defects on the surface of the weld and determine the value of the tensile strength of the results of welding aluminum 6061 material with dimensions of 200 x 20mm with a thickness of 5mm and using the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding process. This study uses current variations of 80A, 100A, 120A and 0.8mm diameter ER4043 electrodes, 1mm and 1.2mm diameter ER5056 electrodes. The tests carried out were the penetrant test with the ASME Section V Article 6 standard and the tensile test with the ASTM E8 standard. The results of the study were obtained on the results of the penetrant test with the most defects on the results of welding electrodes 0.8 and a current of 80A with a number of overlab defects of 10 points, while the highest defect value was in specimen 2 with a welding electrode of 0.8 and a current of 100A, i.e. 30mm overlab defect size. the lowest number of defects is found in the results of welding electrodes 1.2 and a current of 120A with a number of defects of 2, namely porosity and undercut defects. From the results of the tensile test the highest tensile strength value is in the variation of the electrode diameter of 1.2 and the maximum average stress value is 17.76 kg/mm2 and the average maximum strain value is 1.76, then the lowest tensile value is in variations in the diameter of the electrode are 0.8 and the current is 80A with an average maximum voltage value of 2.63 kg/mm2 and an average maximum strain value of 1.02%.
