Abstract

In the era of globalization, scientific and technological advances in joining metals using welding techniques are growing. Welding is a process of connecting 2 parts of metal material using heat energy. In joining metal materials there are things that affect the results of the weld, one of which is the setting of the welding current strength where this current affects the cooling rate process. The purpose of this study was to determine the hardness resistance, the magnitude of the mechanical properties and the presence or absence of defects in welded joints of ASTM A36 Steel Materials when given variations in current strength of 100A, 110A, 120A and variations of cooling media SAE 10W-30 oil, collant, and water. The method used is mechanical testing and testing of welding defects. The results obtained in the NDT Liquid Penetrant test for the best welded joints were obtained on the Coolant cooling medium at a current strength of 120 A where there were only a few undercut defects due to the use of high amperage and fast travel speed movements. From the results of the hardness test, there was an increase in the hardness value in the weld metal area in the coolant cooling media specimen with a current strength of 120 A resulting in 87 HRB because the weld metal area received maximum heat. From the results of the tensile test, the highest tensile strength value was found in the coolant cooling media specimen with a current strength of 120 A with an average maximum stress value of 43.37 kg/mm2 and a strain value of 24.7%. This indicates that the greater the welding current, the value of hardness and tensile strength increases and the coolant cooling medium containing ethylene glycol which functions to raise the boiling point and lower freezing point.
