Abstract

The phenomenon of using social media is increasingly widespread. Especially for teenagers, where today's youth are presented with various technologies, one of which is social media which can be used to search for various information or interact indirectly. Excessive use of social media can have a negative impact, namely social anxiety because when using social media, teenagers tend to compare themselves with others, causing a decrease in the ability to interact directly. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between social media addiction and social anxiety in late adolescents who use Instagram. The study involved 100 students at the 17 August University in Surabaya, who are late teens who use Instagram. This research is a quantitative research with a correlational form. The sampling technique uses a purposive sampling technique. The results of the study through the Pearson Product Moment correlation test obtained a value of 0.948 with p = 0.000 (p <0.001) so that there is a correlation between social media addiction variables and social anxiety variables. When compared with r table, the results obtained are r count 0.948 > r table (0.256) at a significance level of 1%, so it can be concluded that there is a very significant positive correlation between social media addiction variables and social anxiety variables. The higher the social media addiction of the late teens, the higher the social anxiety that the teenager has and conversely the lower the social media addiction of the late teens, the lower the social anxiety in him. Seeing from these results the hypothesis states that there is a relationship between social media addiction and social anxiety in late adolescents.
