Abstract
Porous asphalt is a pavement type with high drainage capability that can reduce water ponding, minimize hydroplaning risk, and improve road safety. Despite these advantages, the use of conventional fillers in porous asphalt mixtures still presents challenges related to sustainability and the limited utilization of construction waste materials. This study aims to analyze the effect of refractory red brick waste as a filler material in PG 70 porous asphalt mixtures on permeability, Marshall characteristics, Cantabro Loss, and the determination of Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC). The research employed an experimental laboratory method involving Marshall testing, Cantabro Loss (CL), Asphalt Flow Down (AFD), and permeability tests on several combinations of red brick waste and lime fillers. The results indicated that the red brick waste filler satisfied the 2018 Bina Marga specifications, with 89.51% passing the No. 200 sieve and an average specific gravity of 2.62 g/cm³. Based on the Marshall, Cantabro Loss, and Asphalt Flow Down analyses, the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) was determined to be 6.0%. At the OAC condition, the average permeability values obtained were 0.20 cm/s for 1% lime filler, 0.11 cm/s for the 0.25% red brick waste–0.75% lime mixture, 0.13 cm/s for the 0.5% red brick waste–0.5% lime mixture, and 0.20 cm/s for the 0.75% red brick waste–0.25% lime mixture. The Cantabro Loss values ranged from 12.56% to 16.68%, remaining below the maximum limit of 35% specified by AAPA 2004. The best performance was achieved by the mixture containing 0.5% red brick waste and 0.5% lime, producing a stability value of 800 kg and a Marshall Quotient of 487 kg/mm. These findings demonstrate that refractory red brick waste has significant potential.
