Abstract
Indonesia is a region with high seismic activity due to the convergence of three major tectonic plates, making high-rise buildings highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate structural systems that satisfy not only structural strength but also seismic performance and cost efficiency. This study aims to compare the seismic performance and costs of a 10-story reinforced concrete building in Surabaya using three systems: Special Moment Resisting Frame System (SMRFS/SRPMK), shear wall, and High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB) base isolation, utilizing pushover analysis based on FEMA guidelines and cost estimation analysis. The results indicate that the shear wall system provides the highest stiffness, reducing the structural period by 17% - 41%, whereas HDRB increases the period by 55% - 127%. HDRB successfully reduces the base shear by up to 46.7%, while the shear wall increases the base shear by up to 70.7% compared to SRPMK. In terms of deformation, the shear wall offers the best drift control, while HDRB reduces superstructure drift by up to 71.7%. Based on the inelastic drift evaluation, the shear wall performs at the Immediate Occupancy (IO) level, SRPMK ranges between IO - Life Safety (LS), and HDRB maintains the superstructure at the IO level by concentrating deformation on the ground floor isolators, which are identified under the Collapse Prevention (CP) category as an earthquake energy dissipation mechanism. Economically, SRPMK is the most cost-effective system at IDR 9.52 billion, followed by HDRB at IDR 10.57 billion and shear wall at IDR 10.68 billion. Consequently, the shear wall system delivers the best structural performance, while HDRB serves as an effective seismic protection alternative with a lower cost than the shear wall system.
