Abstract
AA 6061 aluminum alloy is widely used in structural applications due to its combination of lightweight properties, excellent corrosion resistance, and the ability to be strengthened through heat treatment. In re-melted materials, the remelting process has the potential to increase the formation of intermetallic compounds, particularly Fe–Si-based phases, which are hard and brittle and may reduce the ductility and mechanical performance of the alloy. Therefore, controlling the parameters of T6 heat treatment is essential to optimize the microstructure of this alloy. This study aims to analyze the effect of aging temperature and holding time variations during T6 heat treatment on the formation of intermetallic compounds in re-melted AA 6061 castings. The experimental procedure consisted of remelting AA 6061 using the ingot casting method, followed by solution heat treatment at 540°C for 1 hour, water quenching, and artificial aging at temperatures of 165°C, 185°C, and 205°C with holding times of 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 hours. Microstructural characterization and intermetallic compound identification were carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). Based on previous studies, variations in aging temperature and holding time significantly influence the precipitation of Mg₂Si and the distribution of Fe–Si intermetallic phases, which directly affect the mechanical properties of 6xxx series aluminum alloys. The findings of this study are expected to provide a scientific understanding of the relationship between aging parameters and intermetallic evolution, as well as serve as a basis for determining the optimum T6 heat treatment conditions for re-melted AA 6061.
