Abstract
Yogyakarta’s UNESCO-recognised Philosophical Axis area is rich in history, as exemplified by the former Hotel Toegoe, a listed building. However, this colonial building now lies derelict and has suffered serious structural damage due to a lack of maintenance. This design research aims to formulate a concept for the revitalisation of the former Hotel Toegoe into an educational communal public space, with a view to preserving this heritage asset whilst integrating new functions to meet contemporary social and tourism needs. The design methodology involves macro- and micro-site analysis, a review of conservation literature, and a comparative study of similar sites. The primary strategy employed is a contextual architectural approach to harmonise the massing of the new building with the characteristics of the existing Indische Empire Style colonial architecture through the adaptation of local motifs, visual harmony, and the arrangement of architectural contrasts. The design outcome transforms this area with the concept of the ‘Cakrawala Heritage Communal Space’. The main building area has been repurposed as an information centre and museum documenting the area’s historical legacy, including a visual representation of the 1949 Round Table Conference. Meanwhile, ancillary zones have been situated on the northern side, and the eastern wing has been symmetrically reconstructed to restore the balance of the area’s massing. This revitalisation has successfully created a space for educational social interaction whilst reinforcing the character of Yogyakarta’s historic corridor.
