Abstract
Interpersonal communication in romantic relationships does not always proceed harmoniously, but often becomes a tool that can exert hidden pressure behind expressions of love and loyalty. This study aims to investigate the role of interpersonal communication in the romantic relationships of students in the Communication Studies Program at the University of 17 August 1945 Surabaya, class of 2022, with a focus on experiences of sexual pressure, mental health experiences, and the emergence of cognitive dissonance. This study employs a phenomenological qualitative approach involving four informants; data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which is grounded in the Cognitive Dissonance Theory proposed by Leon Festinger. The results of this study indicate that interpersonal communication, both verbal and nonverbal, plays a role in romantic relationships among students, specifically by serving as a tool that determines their ability to respond to their partner’s invitations to engage in sexual activity. This experience caused all informants to experience unresolved cognitive dissonance, manifested in forms of anxiety, social alienation, declining academic performance, and damage to self-esteem that persisted even after the relationship ended. This study can benefit students and educational institutions in recognizing, preventing, and addressing unhealthy communication in romantic relationships.
