Abstract
College students face various academic and social demands that can give rise to maladaptive perfectionism and impostor syndrome. Maladaptive perfectionism is characterized by individuals having unrealistic self-standards and a fear of failure. Impostor syndrome, on the other hand, is characterized by feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and a fear of being judged incompetent. This study aims to examine the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and impostor syndrome, with self-esteem as a mediator among college students in Surabaya. This study involved 253 college students in Surabaya. The method used in this study was a quantitative correlational design. Data were collected using the maladaptive perfectionism scale, the impostor syndrome scale, and the self-esteem scale. Data were analyzed using mediation analysis. The results of the study showed that maladaptive perfectionism had a significant relationship with impostor syndrome of 0.001 (P<0.05). However, self-esteem was not shown to act as a mediator in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and impostor syndrome (0.804) (P>0.05). These findings indicate that the influence of maladaptive perfectionism on impostor syndrome in students in Surabaya occurs directly, independently of self-esteem.
