Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and social comparison with social appearance anxiety in Generation Z social media users in Surabaya. The research method uses a quantitative correlational approach with 135 respondents aged 13-28 years old selected using accidental sampling techniques. The data analysis technique uses multiple regression using IBM SPSS software version 16 for windows. The results of the study show that self-compassion and social comparison simultaneously have a significant relationship with social appearance anxiety (F = 80.252, 0.000 < 0.05). Partially, self-compassion does not have a significant relationship with social appearance anxiety (t = 1.113, 0.259 > 0.05) meaning that high or low self-compassion has no relationship with the occurrence of social appearance anxiety. Social comparison has a significant positive relationship with social appearance anxiety (t = 11.237, 0.000 < 0.05), meaning that the higher the social comparison, the higher the social appearance anxiety.
