Abstract

This thesis examines the melancholic feeling experienced by the character K in Blade Runner 2049, using the film’s official script as data source. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the research explores how K’s emotional state is portrayed not only through his spoken lines but also through scene directions, setting descriptions, and the minimalistic use of dialogue throughout the script. The script presents a dystopian world in which replicants, like K, are manufactured to obey but gradually evolve into emotionally complex beings. K’s melancholy is reflected in key sequences such as the Baseline Test, his interactions with Joi, and his journey into the ruined city of Las Vegas. The script’s visual and emotional language conveys his sense of longing, alienation, and existential uncertainty. The study finds that the melancholic atmosphere surrounding K is shaped through subtle script cues, including silence, fragmented language, repetitive phrasing, and stark, empty settings. Ultimately, the script reveals K’s melancholy not as a flaw, but as a form of quiet resistance and emotional depth within a mechanized world.
