Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between locus of control and intention to corruption, as well as to test the mediating role of moral engagement among university students in Surabaya. A total of 350 active students from public and private universities participated in this study, selected using a convenience sampling technique. The research employed a quantitative correlational non-experimental approach with a mediation design, and data analysis was conducted using linear regression following the steps of Baron and Kenny (1986), assisted by IBM SPSS Statistics version 27.0. Measurements were carried out using three scales: the locus of control scale (consisting of three dimensions: internality, powerful others, and chance), the moral engagement scale, and the intention to corruption scale. The results revealed that internal locus of control had a significant negative effect on intention to corruption (β = −0.088; p = 0.045), while the powerful others and chance dimensions had significant positive effects (β = 0.526 and β = 0.247; p < 0.001). Furthermore, internality showed a significant positive effect on moral engagement (β= 0.299; p < 0.001), whereas powerful others and chance showed significant negative effects (β = −0.504; p < 0.001; β = −0.187; p = 0.006). After including moral engagement in the model, the effect of internality on intention to corruption became non-significant (p = 0.204), while moral engagement itself had a significant negative effect on intention to corruption (β = −0.462; p < 0.001). These findings indicate that moral engagement fully mediates the relationship between internal locus of control and intention to corruption, and partially mediates the relationship between powerful others and chance with intention to corruption. The results highlight the importance of strengthening internal control and moral engagement as key strategies in preventing corrupt intentions among students.
