Abstract

Corruption is no longer confined to the governmental sector but has also extended into the realm of education. Ironically, university students who are expected to serve as agents of change in advancing the nation are instead participating in corrupt practices within academic settings. One psychological factor believed to influence an individual's tendency toward corrupt behavior is moral norm. However, the psychological mechanism that bridges this relationship still requires further exploration. This study aims to examine the relationship between moral norm and intention to corruption among university students in Surabaya, as well as to test the mediating role of moral disengagement in that relationship. The study employed a correlational quantitative approach using convenience sampling. A total of 348 students from public and private universities in Surabaya participated as respondents. Data were analyzed using mediation analysis with PROCESS Macro by Hayes. The results showed that moral norm has a direct and significant positive relationship with intention to corruption (coefficient = 0.346; p = 0.000). In addition, the indirect effect through moral disengagement was also significant (b = 0.205; p < 0.000; 95% CI [.122–.295]), indicating a partial mediating role. These findings suggest that the higher the level of moral norm possessed by students, the greater the likelihood that they will form intentions to engage in corruption especially when they tend to relinquish moral responsibility through mechanisms of moral disengagement. The implications of these findings emphasize the importance of strengthening moral values that are not only cognitive in nature but also emotionally and behaviorally internalized, in order to prevent the rationalization of unethical actions.
