Abstract

High rise buildings are vulnerable to lateral forces such as earthquakes and wind due to their mass and stiffness. This study compares the seismic performance of fixed base and base isolated systems using High Damping Rubber Bearings HDRB on an 8 story steel structure. Nonlinear static pushover analysis was conducted in ETABS version 18, referring to SNI 1726 2019 and FEMA 356. Key parameters analyzed include lateral displacement, inter story drift, base shear, P Delta effects, plastic hinge distribution, and the initial cost of base isolation. Lateral displacement increased in the base isolated model (54,491 mm X direction and 54,795 mm Y), compared to the fixed base model with (43,109 X and 43,513 Y). However, maximum inter story drift was reduced by 14,28 percentage X and 13,39 percentage Y, indicating improved building flexibility. Base shear decreased significantly from 12.167,52 X and 12.335,10 Y to 2.644,93 X and 2.534,37 Y. The theta coefficient also decreased, showing reduced P Delta sensitivity. Despite these improvements, the performance drift ratios increased under FEMA 356, shifting classification from Immediate Occupancy in the fixed base model to Collapse Prevention in the isolated model. According to ASCE 41-13, the fixed base model remains Immediate Occupancy while the isolated structure is also classified as Collapse Prevention. Plastic hinges in the base isolated model formed later, demonstrating better energy dissipation. The estimated initial cost of HDRB isolation using model HN070X4S is approximately Rp. 1.052.631.342 for a fifty year lifespan. This research confirms that HDRB improves seismic performance and serves as a guide for engineers in earthquake resistant design.
