Abstract

This research discusses the phenomenon of partner rental services in Surabaya, focusing on "Rental Pacar Koibito." This phenomenon is popular among urban communities as it is seen as a solution to loneliness and the need for social companionship at events such as weddings and family gatherings. The study employs phenomenological methods and symbolic interaction theory to explore the phenomenon, experiences, and communication from the service providers' perspective. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with several informants who had direct experience with this service. The results indicate that partner rental services not only meet the social and emotional needs of clients but also provide economic opportunities for service providers who often face financial difficulties. This service changes the social dynamics in a major city like Surabaya, reflecting a cultural shift where social interactions become more transactional. Service providers strive to maintain professionalism in the face of societal stigma, while clients seek the comfort and companionship they lack in their daily lives. Thus, it can be concluded that the purpose of partner rental services, particularly Rental Pacar Koibito, is to assist individuals who are in challenging situations.
