Abstract

This research aims to explore the meanings of messages contained in scenes that represent the ideal body image in Greta Gerwig's film "Barbie." Using John Fiske's semiotic analysis, this film critiques the beauty standards and gender roles shaped by capitalism through the representation of bodies and characters. Various scenes in the film highlight how the media and toy industry promote ideal body images that are often unrealistic and exclusive. Characters such as Giant Barbie, Midge who is no longer produced because she is deemed abnormal and unprofitable, plus-size Barbie, the transformation of Barbie's feet, reactions to cellulite, Weird Barbie, and the appearances of the Kens, all criticize the way capitalism creates and exploits selfdissatisfaction for economic gain. While Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" appears to present a social message about body diversity and women's empowerment, in reality, it still reinforces the norms shaped by capitalism. Instead of genuinely challenging the existing values, the film creates a new body image still trapped within commercialism. The social messages conveyed seem more like a guise to conceal the persistent influence of capitalism, packaged more subtly but with the same essence.
