Abstract

In reality, many students face difficulties or have their own obstacles in working on their theses. These difficulties can cause students to lose motivation in completing their theses. Therefore, peer groups (circles) play a very important role in building that motivation. This study aims to understand the role of peer group communication in building motivation to work on theses. The method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. In this study, the researcher used symbolic interactionism theory and self-development, with three foundations: mind, self, and society. The results of the study show that peer groups (circles) play a very important role in building motivation to work on theses. Their roles include providing emotional support, offering solutions/advice, and directly helping through actions. In these interactions, there are visible verbal and non-verbal symbols. The verbal symbols that are visible include gestures, attitudes, and behaviors. The meaning formed through these interactions can help informants and their circles understand and know each other's experiences in the thesis-writing process.
