Abstract

In the post-truth era, people tend to believe information based on feelings, emotional strength, and personal beliefs rather than objective facts. Subjectivity often overrides objective facts, especially in social interactions via social media. This phenomenon is clearly evident in the use of the TikTok application, where flexing content (showing off) comes into the spotlight. Flexing is a term for showing off wealth and social status, originally popular among African Americans in the 1990s. In this context, this study focuses on the perception of Communication Science students toward flexing content on TikTok. This research aims to understand the perceptions of Communication Science students at the 17 August 1945 University of Surabaya regarding flexing content on TikTok. Students are often exposed to content that emphasizes unattainable standards, which can trigger social comparison, stress, and pressure. Flexing is often used to elevate social status in the digital era, attracting the attention of society or followers on social media. This phenomenon can negatively impact the mental health and real-life experiences of users. The research employs in-depth interviews with informants selected through purposive sampling and participatory observation on social media. The results indicate that students' perceptions of flexing content on TikTok are varied. Some students feel that this content can provide inspiration and motivation, while others believe it creates social pressure and negatively impacts their mental health. This study is expected to provide a better understanding of how to mitigate the risks that may arise from social media use, particularly related to flexing content on TikTok. By understanding students' perceptions, more effective strategies can be developed to reduce the negative impacts of this phenomenon.
