Abstract

As the world develops increasingly rapidly, creative ideas are needed to utilize natural waste processing, such as natural fibers. Natural waste can be used to make alternative materials that can be compared to industrial scale metal materials in the form of composites. Composite materials are a combination of 2 or more materials which aim to make the material better in terms of mechanical properties and economically. Natural Fiber as a (reinforcement) composite material has the characteristics of being very light, can be easily formed, is resistant to corrosion, and has an affordable price. Polypropylene as a binder (matrix) is included in the PMC (Polymer Matrix Composite) composite category. This research aims to determine the strength value of polypropylene composite material reinforced with coconut shell particles with a size of 200 - 250 mesh which is given 6 treatment variants. Composite preparation was mixed at a speed of 30 rpm within 20 minutes, the mechanical properties testing process provided was tensile and impact tests. From the research data it was found that the coconut shell particle size of 200 - 250 mesh in the 7% alkaline liquid treatment variation had a tensile stress value of 24.03 MPa and the impact test value produced an absorbed energy of 1.054 Joules. Meanwhile, the lowest value in the tensile test was obtained by the 120℃ hot water treatment variant of 8.90 MPa and the impact test with a value of 0.582 Joules.
