Abstract
The design of Alzheimer’s Care Facility is motivated by statistical data on the growth of elderly with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, which number increased continuously every year. Another problem founded is there still a lot of Alzheimer’s sufferer who don’t have caregiver. This problem arises because of less awareness of the sufferers, families, and caregivers about Alzheimer’s. The next problem is the care facilities for Alzheimer;s are still lacking compared to the number of Alzheimer;s sufferers in the Province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. In addition, the existing facilities isn’t suitable in terms of facilities and architecture for physical and mental of Alzheimer’s patients. Alzheimer’s patients have different behaviors and needs according to the stage of Alzheimer’s. Therefore, a behavorial approach that pay attention to changes in patient’s habit, mentality, and behavioral needs to be applied in architectural approach. The design approach that answers these problems is the therapeutic healing architectural approach which would be the basic for the whole process of facilities design. Other things that affect the design are the character and activities of the user which translated into space planning and design. The character of the object, Alzheimer’s care facility, and the character of location also affect the facility design process. The design of the facility is expected to accommodate a long term treatment for Alzheimer’s sufferers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
