Abstract

In this thesis the writer discusses about Narcissistic Personality Disorder experienced by the main character in the novel entitled American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, Patrick Bateman. The issues discussed include: (1) what are the symptoms of Patrick’s narcissistic personality disorder? (2) what are the causes of Patrick’s narcissistic personality disorder? (3) what are the effects of Patrick’s narcissistic personality disorder? In analyzing the problems, the writer uses qualitative research because the data are collected in the form of words rather than numbers. The procedures of data collection are read carefully the novel, then identifies and marks some words or sentences which shows Narcissistic Personality Disorder causes, symptoms and effects, lastly the writer chooses and gives code that are page where the Narcissistic Personality Disorder are found. The procedures of data analysis are identifies the Narcissistic Personality Disorder from the novel, analyzes, and then draws conclusion about the first and second step data analysis. After analyzing the data, the writer of this thesis is sure that Patrick positively suffers the NPD because most of the traits that Patrick unconsciously shows match the symptoms of the theory. Patrick's traits that match the symptoms of NPD are expectation of constant praise and admiration, envy others or belief that others envy him, belief that he is special and more important than others, arrogance, failure to recognize others' needs and feelings. The writer also finds out the causes that establish the Narcissistic Personality Disorder suffered by Patrick, those are: lack of parental attention and environmental influence. Lack of parental attention is both his parents are too busy to earn a living and both his parents divorced, and for the environmental influence is Patrick grows up in an environment whose people has bad personalities like Patrick. His colleagues like to humiliate others, and to be arbitrary to people who are considered inferior than them. Of course all the treatment must have consequences, as well as what happened in Patrick's life. The bad things that come to Patrick’s life caused by his NPD are Patrick must have broken relationship with people around and he become depressed. Keywords: NPD, the symptom, the cause, the effect
