Abstract
ASTM A36 steel is a low-carbon steel widely used in construction applications due to its good formability; however, it has relatively limited wear resistance and corrosion resistance. To improve these properties, one commonly used method is pack carburizing heat treatment followed by quenching, which forms a hardened surface layer. This process causes microstructural transformation from ferrite–pearlite to martensite, contributing to increased hardness, but it may also affect corrosion resistance due to the formation of residual stresses. This study aims to analyze the effect of pack carburizing heat treatment on the mechanical properties and corrosion rate of ASTM A36 steel at temperature variations of 850°C, 900°C, and 950°C. The experimental procedure involves pack carburizing followed by quenching using distilled water. Subsequently, Rockwell hardness testing (HRC), microstructure observation at 50× magnification, and corrosion testing using the weight loss method in seawater, rainwater, and NaCl solution were carried out. The results show that the highest hardness value was obtained at 950°C, reaching 36.22 HRC, while the lowest value was 32.76 HRC in the untreated condition. The microstructure changed from a dominant ferrite–pearlite phase to martensite with retained austenite, which increased with rising temperature. Corrosion test results indicate that the corrosion rate tends to be lower for specimens treated at 850°C–900°C compared to the untreated condition; however, it increases again at 950°C due to residual stresses and microstructural changes
