Abstract
This study aims to explore the interpersonal communication patterns be-tween Communication Science students of the 2022 cohort at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya and their thesis supervisors in reducing anxiety during the thesis writing process. This research is motivated by students’ academic anx-iety, such as fear of asking questions, feeling awkward during supervision ses-sions, worrying about revisions, and having difficulty expressing research obsta-cles. The theory used in this study is Joseph A. DeVito’s interpersonal communi-cation theory, which consists of five indicators: openness, empathy, supportive-ness, positiveness, and equality. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study de-sign. The subjects of this research are Communication Science students of the 2022 cohort at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya who are currently under-going or have experienced thesis supervision. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD), in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, datadisplay, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was strength-ened through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and member check-ing. The results show that the interpersonal communication patterns between students and thesis supervisors are classified into three types: effective, adaptive, and less effective communication patterns. Open, empathetic, supportive, posi-tive, and equal communication helps students feel more comfortable, confident, and willing to express their difficulties during supervision. In contrast, overly for-mal, less responsive communication that does not provide space for discussion tends to maintain students’ anxiety. Therefore, the quality of interpersonal com-munication plays an important role in reducing students’ anxiety during the thesis writing process.
