Abstract

Academic stress is a psychological condition commonly experienced by students, particularly vocational high school students who are simultaneously confronted with academic demands and vocational skill requirements. Internal factors such as grit and external factors such as parental social support are assumed to play a role in helping students cope with academic stress. This study aimed to examine the relationship between grit and parental social support with academic stress among students of SMK Krian 1 Sidoarjo. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research participants consisted of 301 students selected using stratified random sampling based on the Isaac and Michael table at a 95% confidence level. Data were collected using academic stress, grit, and parental social support scales administered online. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman Rank correlation because the data were not normally distributed and did not meet the assumption of linearity. The results showed that grit had a negative but non-significant relationship with academic stress (r = −0.040; p > 0.05), and parental social support also showed a negative and non-significant relationship with academic stress (r = −0.006; p > 0.05). These findings indicate that academic stress among vocational high school students is influenced by various factors beyond grit and parental social support; therefore, future research is recommended to examine other variables more comprehensively, such as academic workload, academic pressure, self-regulated learning, stress coping, or the school environment.
