Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between emotional regulation and cyberbullying behavior in young adults in Surabaya City, with conformity behavior as a mediator variable. The increasing phenomenon of cyberbullying along with the intensity of social media use in young adults encourages the need to understand the psychological and social factors that influence it. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study participants were 130 young adults aged 18–25 years who actively use social media and live in Surabaya City, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using an emotional regulation scale, a conformity behavior scale, and a cyberbullying behavior scale, then analyzed using correlation analysis and mediation tests. The results showed that emotional regulation was significantly related to both cyberbullying and conformity behavior, and conformity behavior was also significantly related to cyberbullying behavior. In addition, the results of the mediation test showed that conformity behavior significantly mediated the relationship between emotional regulation and cyberbullying behavior, where emotional regulation influenced cyberbullying behavior both directly and indirectly through conformity behavior. The conclusion of this study confirms that low emotional regulation ability increases cyberbullying behavior, both directly and through group conformity pressure.
