Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between Internal locus of control and academic stress in working students at the University of 17 August 1945 Surabaya. The study population was 239 working students, with a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was the Internal locus of control scale Levenson, (1981) with 8 items measuring the Internality aspect, using a Likert scale of 1-5. Meanwhile, academic stress was measured using the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SLSI) Gadzella (1994) with 19 valid items, also on a Likert scale of 1-5. Validity and reliability tests were carried out using non-parametik and Cronbach's Alpha alpha = 0.70, indicating that the measuring instrument functions well and is reliable. Data analysis used spearmant rank correlation with the help of SPSS version 27. The results of the study showed a significant negative relationship between Internal locus of control and academic stress r = -0,561, p = 0,001, which means that the higher the Internal locus of control of a working student, the lower the level of academic stress. Internal locus of control contributed 74,2% to academic stress. The implication of these results is that working students who have Internal locus of control are more optimal in managing academic stress to other colleagues.
