Abstract

Marital readiness is one of the essential developmental tasks in early adulthood, requiring psychological, emotional, and relational preparedness. During this stage, individuals are confronted with the formation of stable intimate relationships and long-term decision-making related to marriage. However, marital readiness is influenced not only by age or social factors, but also by internal psychological factors, such as attachment style and emotional maturity. Differences in attachment patterns and individuals’ ability to manage emotions are believed to play a significant role in determining the extent to which a person feels prepared to enter married life. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 164 unmarried early adults aged 20–40 years who resided in Surabaya City and were selected using a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected using Likert-scale attitude questionnaires, which are commonly employed psychometric instruments in survey-based research. The results revealed a significant simultaneous effect of attachment style and emotional maturity on marital readiness, with a coefficient of determination (R-square) of 0.663 and a significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Partial correlation analysis indicated that secure attachment was positively and significantly associated with marital readiness (t = 1.408; p < 0.05), whereas anxious-ambivalent attachment (t = −1.916; p < 0.05) and avoidant attachment (t = −4.327; p < 0.05) showed significant negative associations. In addition, emotional maturity demonstrated a significant positive relationship with marital readiness (t = 4.875; p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that higher levels of secure attachment and emotional maturity are associated with greater marital readiness, while higher levels of anxious-ambivalent and avoidant attachment is related to lower marital readiness among early adults.
