Abstract

The issue of corruption in Indonesia presents a serious challenge that has wide reaching impacts on the education sector and societal life. This study aims to examine the relationship between trait cynicism and intention to corruption, with moral disengagement as a mediating variable. The research employed a correlational quantitative approach using a cross-sectional design. A total of 460 students from various universities in Surabaya participated in the study, selected through convenience sampling. The instruments used included the Intention to corruption Scale, Trait cynicism Scale, and Moral disengagement Scale. Data were analyzed using PROCESS Macro model 4 (Hayes) version 5.0. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between trait cynicism and intention to corruption (β = 0,844; p = 0,000), indicating that the higher the level of trait cynicism among students, the higher their intention to engage in corrupt behavior. Moreover, moral disengagement was found to partially mediate the relationship between trait cynicism and intention to corruption (β = 0,419; p = 0,000). These findings suggest that students with a cynical disposition toward others tend to disengage from moral responsibility, thereby increasing their intention to commit corrupt acts.
