Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between social anxiety and selfesteem with fear of missing out (FOMO) in adolescent social media users. The high desire to see other people's activities online on social media can lead to anxiety in individuals when comparing themselves with other people's experiences that are considered more valuable than themselves or what is called fear of missing out. The subjects in this study were adolescents aged 12- 19 years domiciled in Surabaya who actively used social media involving 130 respondents. The sampling technique used non-probability sampling technique with quota sampling method. The instruments used in this study were the fear of missing out scale, social anxiety scale and self-esteem scale. The data analysis technique used in this research is multiple linear regression. The results of multiple regression analysis show that the relationship between social anxiety and self-esteem simultaneously with fear of missing out (F value = 147.114 with a significance of 0.000 <0.05) which means simultaneously (together) social anxiety and self-esteem have a relationship with fear of missing out, and an R Square score of 0.699 which shows social anxiety and self-esteem have an influence of 69.9% on FOMO, so the first hypothesis is accepted. Partial test results show that there is a significant positive relationship between social anxiety and fear of missing out so that the higher the social anxiety, the higher the fear of missing out, and vice versa, so the second hypothesis is accepted. Partial test results show that there is a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and fear of missing out so that the higher the self-esteem, the lower the fear of missing out, and vice versa, so the third hypothesis is accepted.
